A professional development practice to enhance principals' instructional leadership – enabling and constraining arrangements

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to increase the knowledge principals' professional development (PD) by focusing on arrangements that shape a PD practice initiated enhance instructional leadership. Design/methodology/approach draws findings from three-year initiative in Swedish school district. data consist field notes and semi-structured interviews with principals managers. Theoretically, takes its starting point theory architectures cultural-discursive, material-economic social-political practices. Findings Practices for require fine balance prevent perception hierarchical control. Designated time, common artifacts external expertise are enable PD. High expectations relations between managers both constrain As trustful particular importance, implication others organizing make sure collaborative work settings also become natural way working principals. building longer time perspective recommended.
